“We need a strategy for that.”

What do you mean by strategy? I ask.
A short discussion follows.
Someone steps up: “I’ll take charge of that.”
A few months later, we regroup.
“That’s not a strategy,” someone says.
What do you mean by strategy? I ask again.
Another short discussion.
Someone shrugs: “Anyway, let’s crack on.”
Some nod. Some stay quiet.
Someone else says: “Shall we just go with this?”
If you are high up in construction, this might sound familiar.
Over the years coaching leadership teams, I’ve asked that question — what do you mean by strategy? — loads of times.
Here’s some of what I’ve heard:
“It’s a spreadsheet with all the numbers rolled up.”
“It’s a PowerPoint slide deck.”
“It’s the P6 Programme”
“It’s a thick document full of thinking and detail.”
“My strategy? Keep calm and carry on.”
“It’s what that consultancy gave us a few years ago.”
“We all know what our strategy is. Do we really need to write it down?”
Every now and then, you meet someone who actually gets strategy.
It’s rare. It’s refreshing. It’s powerful.
That’s why I’m setting up a Strategy Mastermind — specifically for construction industry execs and leaders who want to:
Think more clearly about strategy
Share their thinking, be heard, get feedback and ideas
Learn from other strategic thinkers and from a master (not me)
Make new business relationships
Go onto develop a strategy that actually makes a difference
It’s a small group. We start when there are six.
If you’re curious, message me and I’ll tell you more.
View from the field
Great initiative, most “strategies” are tactical responses to problem solving!! One of the challenges in today’s world is developing Strategies that can turn on an event and moving away from “Strategic Business Plans” that are steeped in 5+ years view of the world!! Chris Mackenzie-Grieve
