and the truth is

Listening to the radio, watching Question Time, I am noticing that members of one political party keep repeating “and the truth is”. It’s not the truth, it’s their opinion.

What is the truth? It depends on your perspective. I’m not sure there is such a thing as the absolute truth. Maybe it’s true that we are all going to die, though some people have another angle on that.

I’m wondering if people in this political party have been trained to keep repeating “and the truth is”, to deliberately supplant their opinion into our subconscious in the mistaken hope that if they say it enough we will come to believe it. Not me, I see it for what it is – at best their heart felt opinion at worst their party line.

I’m also noticing that this claim on the truth is prevalent everywhere, not just in politics.

In dialogue we listen to and work with other people’s truth and we all grow as a result. Though in debate I try to win you over to my truth at the expense of your truth and you do the same and we leave more fixed in our respective views, none the wiser.

The route or origin of the word debate is to smash apart. You see this in the House of Commons and in exchanges on construction projects.

…… and the truth is, none of this is the truth, just my opinion and what do I know about anything?
