BIM Task Group – Making BIM Happen

Mark Bew, Chairman BIM Task Group and PCSG called for industry wide engagement in the development of a free to use Building Information Modeling toolkit. With all public sector projects to be BIM Level 2 compliant within three years, the purpose of the “Making BIM Happen” workshop series was to:

  • Understand the current state of tools supporting BIM
  • Consult stakeholders and develop a functional specification for the toolkit
  • Get buy-in and create alliances between organisations wanting to build it

All recognised UK experts were invited, though for organisational reasons, participation was capped at 100 people

DSA Intervention

  • Designing and facilitating series of three workshops
  • Sourcing and managing the venues
  • Briefing speakers, enabling them to fine tune content to deliver key messages within strict timeslots
  • Creating engaging breakout sessions to capture information and gain commitment

Remarkable results

  • The workshop series was devised and delivered within one month
  • Over forty bids from around the world were received
  • An alliance of organisations, led by NBS, built the Toolkit
  • The toolkit has been accessed by more than 20,000 unique users from over 100 countries
  • NBS is positioned as international leader for BIM

Mark Bew, now also Strategic Adviser to Digital Built Britain, said:

The success of the BIM level 2 programme has seen investment in innovation, digital technology and collaboration start to make a step change in built environment infrastructure delivery. I have worked with Dave (DSA) for fifteen years and have found his flexible, thorough and thoughtful approach highly effective in identifying, enabling and sustaining change in challenging environments.

Stephen Hamil, Director of Research and Innovation, NBS, added:

We had the right speakers and the right topics. Dave’s skill in facilitating 100 people to come to a consensus on a prioritised set of user requirements, in an innovative and fun way, was remarkable. The workshops were the best requirements gathering sessions I have ever taken part in.
