Magnox – Berkeley Vaults waste retrieval

Magnox formerly operated and now decommissions nuclear power stations in the UK. In 2010 it awarded Cavendish Nuclear a contract to design and build an intermediate level waste retrieval and processing facility at the Berkeley nuclear site in Gloucester.

Magnox reported that:
“This project represents one of the highest hazard activities to be undertaken.”

With the project reported to be eight weeks behind schedule, team friction rising and little more than a year to go, DSA was commissioned to develop the project leadership team, using its Collaborate Start2Finish™ approach.

Remarkable results

  • Successful completion of the project by Spring 2016 and waste retrieved from the Berkeley Vaults for the first time
  • A Team Achievement Award for Cavendish in the Health and Safety Category of the Babcock Support Service Division Excellence Awards in 2016

We have been awarded team of the year – I just wanted to acknowledge your contribution towards our success. The format of your team focus days, repeated every 90 days, together with the support in between had a much bigger effect than many appreciated at the time.
Steve Beresford, Senior Project Manager, Cavendish Nuclear

Two years after working with you there is a lasting impact. We are now applying the skills learned across a wider set of projects. The lasting benefits include the ability to build trust, respect and meaningful working relationships. This allows difficult questions to be asked and issues resolved in a more co-operative way.
Simon Derrick, Project Manager, Magnox

All the hard work has paid off and there is a huge sense of achievement for everyone here at Berkeley, Magnox and the entire supply chain.
Paul Oswald, Head of Projects Magnox
